Transform Coding in the VVC Standard

In the past decade, development of transform coding techniques has achieved significant progress and several advanced tools have been adopted in new generation Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. this paper, a brief history during VVC standardization is presented, standard are described detail together with their initial design, incremental improvements implementation aspects. To improve efficiency, four introduced VVC, which namely Multiple Transform Selection (MTS), Low-Frequency Non-separable Secondary (LFNST) Sub-Block (SBT), as well large (64-point) type-2 DCT. The experimental results on reference software (VTM-9.0) show that average 4.5% 3.6% overall gain can be by for All Intra Random Access configurations, respectively.
